阿宾顿 student credits intensive summer program for success, early graduation

Viana zami坚持认为pass, a six-week program for incoming first year students at 阿宾顿, gave her a head start on her college career.  

“PaSSS helped me connect with other students 和 with academics. 这增强了我的信心. My transition from high school to college was smoother,” zami, who will receive her degree in 康复及人文服务说,. 

“PaSSS was where it all began on my path to success at 宾州州立大学阿宾顿分校,” she said. 

Through PaSSS, zami was eligible to obtain employment on campus. 她接受了…的职位 Office of 发展及校友关系她在这个职位上干了三年. She also worked as a PaSSS peer mentor for other first-year students.  

“I enjoyed working with the first-year students, supporting them 和 sharing my experiences. It helped me improve my leadership, communication, 和 teamwork skills. My message to them was: This is your time, your investment so make use of it,”她说。.  

She worked on a six-week college immersion experience for Latino high school students from Philadelphia through a program 阿宾顿 hosts with Congreso de Latinos Unidos.

zami was the recipient of several scholarships at 阿宾顿 including a Korman Promise Scholarship, endowed by longtime 阿宾顿 supporter Steve Korman. 作为 完成易胜博 initiative, she received a scholarship endowed by Lorraine C. 巴萨拉和两个 敞开大门奖学金, one endowed by Ira Lubert 和 the other by Ajay 和 P. 奈尔.  

“I am thankful to the donors for investing in my education, providing me assurance that people are rooting for me to succeed,”她说。.

During her time at 阿宾顿, zami attended leadership training sponsored by 学生事务 和 was selected for a social justice-focused Alternative Spring Break placement in Washington, D.C., where she worked in a local soup kitchen with other students. 

She encourages 阿宾顿 students to take advantage of co-curricular opportunities on campus. Her experiences participating in the Student Philanthropy Council, 非洲学生组织, 和 Sister2Sister helped her build rapport with others 和 develop professional skills.  

zami hailed two 阿宾顿 康复及人文服务 faculty, 迈克尔Levetsky安东尼Strazza他是她的导师. 

“They were very supportive 和 always responsive. They helped me to succeed within the major 和 beyond with great counsel 和 provided me with the necessary resources,”她说。.

As she prepares to graduate, Zemis reflected on why 阿宾顿 was her first choice for college. 

“阿宾顿 is small, it is beautiful, 和 there is always something happening. You meet different people from different backgrounds 和 connect with them 和 have great conversations with them. Although I was a commuter student, I received a quality college experience,”她说。. 

zami embraced her college experience, 和 she is thankful for her time at 阿宾顿.  

“阿宾顿 provided me with different perspectives. 阿宾顿是如此多样化. We embrace our differences 和 connect through our similarities,” she said. “我的心中充满了感激之情.”
